Abstract

a diverging type stereo camera arrangement is introduced to use in hand-held mobile divices uch as mobile phone, hand pc and introscopes. the arrangement allows making the intercamera distance much smaller than that in the conventional stereo camera arrangements such as parallel and radial types by adjusting the diverging angle. computer simulation shows that it can introduce more distortion than the parallel type but it can enhance the depth sense.

parallel
radial(converging)

disparity is the main cue of inducing  depth sense but it diminishes as the camera focus distance
increases.
Due to these reasons, the stereo camera mounted
on the small imaging devices can only be applicable to a short distance objects and induces very limited depth sense,
though the small size image sensor and accordingly small size pixels can somewhat alleviate these problems.
Since the constant diverging angle produces a constant disparity between left and right cameras without
regarding focusing distances, this camera arrangement will be preferred to be mounted on small imaging devices which
do not have enough space for a stereo camera.
